My husband started having issues as few years ago and he is creeping up to the age of 45, next month. Now onto the good stuff.Here is what the hubby says he notices when he takes and does not take his prostate plus.

Are there cheap brands that you can get for just a few dollars? Yes! But are they the best choice? Are there expensive ones that will cost you a small fortune? Yes! But are they the best choice?

So many choices so which kind are the best choice…is there only one?Like everything else in this world there is not only ONE choice that is right but rather many our there that could work for you. The key is to do the research and find out which multivitamin is right for you. I will share with you my research and what I choose and why in hopes it helps you are someone you know make the right decision.

I have bought into the gender specific pills in the past and when I stood at the shelf at my local pharmacy store it would take me 15 minutes to decide…Women’s one-a-day, en’s one-a-day for the hubby, for weight loss, extra iron, senior, active lifestyle, blah blah blah. How the heck are you suppose to know which formula is right. If I am working out for a month does it really matter if I change from the regular one a day multivitamin to an active lifestyle one? So many questions and I never felt comfortable if I made the right decision. Is there really that big of a difference that it matters which I choose?

Then I got my Masters degree in Nutrition and have learned how to do research on nutrition and realized that when it comes to vitamins and minerals…one multivitamin a day really does not make that much difference if your eating is less then desirable and if you are taking a tablet form and not a capsule form, you might as well throw the bottle in the trash because the amount you absorb is so minimal it does not do much for you.

One thing I can tell you that I know is that even though the tablet forms are cheap, the absorption rate of those types are less then half the pill, on a good day, and could even be as little as 5-10% of the pill. The body has to break it down first and then the nutrients can be taken into your blood stream for good use. The problem is that our digestive systems are not always, if ever, optimal for absorption and there are days your GI tract can push out that tablet before it is even fully broken down. On a good day you may get half. So what do you do…take 2, 3, 4? Well our body is funny. Just because you take in more does not mean your body will absorb more.

The body only stores a few vitamins and minerals and those storage levels are so low that they only last a day or two, if even that. The body takes its initial needs our of your vitamins and minerals and then flushes out the rest within the urinary system. The key to any supplement is to take them in small amounts all day long.

Capsules are a better way to get your vitamins and minerals. The reason is that the capsule starts dissolving immediately and your chances of getting most of that pills absorption are extremely likely. Is it 100%, of course not, nothing is, but it is quite a bit more then a tablet absorption. So really one pill of a capsule multivitamin will give you what 2-3 tablets will over the course of the day and only if you take those tablets one at a time, a few hours apart. So if you are spending even as little as $$10 for a cheap tablet multivitamin for 90 pills then taking those 3 times a day would cost you about .33 cents pr day and last you a month and you don’t know if you are even getting what you need out of it.

Now if you buy encapsulated form of multivitamins for $25 for 90 pills and you only take 1 per day then you are paying about .27 cents per day and it will last you 3 months instead of only 1 month compared to the tablet form. So this is actually cheaper in the long run then the tablet form. Now I take two encapsulated multivitamins a day. I take one at breakfast and one at dinner. So my $25 investment lasts me 45 days and only costs me .54cents per day. I don’t mind spending just a few pennies more per day as I know that my body is actually getting what it needs. So when comparing .33 cents to .54 cents per day…even though it is more, I am getting more. I love numbers so I tend to break down a lot of my research this way.

Now are tablet pills always bad? No…and they are needed, just not in vitamins and minerals. Medications are designed in tablet and capsules because they need to be targeted for absorption in specific areas of your body.

Liquid vitamins and minerals are great too and absorption is even better but for me, they are really really expensive and I absolutely hate the taste. I have tried some calcium liquid and it makes me gag so I opt for the encapsulated forms. They are easy to swallow and I can tell my body feels good when i take them.

Should multivitamins be gender specific?

Multivitamins do not need to be gender specific IF you are keeping you nutritional needs in check with your food, drink and other supplement choices. The extra calcium in women’s multivitamins can be good but the mistake women make is thinking that is enough. Any woman over 30 really should be taking more calcium and this can be call the way up to 1500 mg per day. No one will find everything they need in a multivitamin but it is definitely a great start. so gender specific? Not really? I buy the same mega multivitamin for me and the hubs. So much easier too!
